    Prerequisite: None

    This course is a comprehensive slide lecture study of furniture, decorative arts, and interior architecture from the major style periods of antiquity through the beginning of the l9th Century in France. Lectures concentrate on furniture, ornament, craftsmen, techniques and the evolution of the interior. This class is directed toward careers in interior architectural design, furniture design and restoration, theatrical set design, historic preservation, and retail sales in residential and commercial design.

  3. Course Objectives:

    Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:

    1. Identify the classic contributions that have created historical influences on the decorative arts, period furniture and interior architecture from Antiquity, the Middle Ages, and the Renaissance through the French Empire Period.
    2. Identify the specific design contributions of the French Baroque, Rococo, Neo-classic, Directoire, and Empire periods.
    3. Use correct terminology to describe furniture parts, materials, construction, craftsmen, ornament, and finishes.
    4. Recognize and identify historical reproductions and historical influences in contemporary design.
    5. Review basic furniture, accessories, and decorative art design vocabulary.
    6. Review the changing use of surface materials and motifs through the centuries and apply historic backgrounds to contemporary installations.
    7. Evaluate the historical, political, social and economic implications that affected design in the Renaissance, Baroque, Rococo, Neo-classic, and Empire Periods.
    8. Compare the decorative arts, period furniture, and interior architecture of the Renaissance, Baroque, Rococo, Neoclassic, and Empire periods from a global perspective.

    The student will:

    1. Prepare illustrated reports identifying the characteristics of major furniture periods, styles, and designers in Western Europe from antiquity to the beginning of the nineteenth century in France
    2. Visit 2 historical sites and produce a written comparison and analysis of two different historical periods of furniture design involving 4 specific furniture pieces.
  5. Methods of Presentation:

    Illustrated lecture/discussion together with continuous slide presentation.
